Why book with us
VW DSG gearbox service with clear advice.
DSG is Volkswagen's dual-clutch automatic gearbox, fitted to thousands of Golfs, Polos, Passats and Tiguans, as well as Audis (where it is called S tronic), SEATs and Skodas. It shifts quickly and is economical, but it is a complex piece of engineering, and it does not forgive neglect.
There are two main families. The six-speed and larger seven-speed "wet" gearboxes, used with the 2.0 TDI and more powerful petrol engines, run their clutches in oil. That oil and its filter need changing at regular intervals — Volkswagen typically specifies around every 40,000 miles — and many cars miss it because it is not part of a standard service. The seven-speed "dry" gearbox used with smaller engines such as the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI has sealed-for-life clutches but a separate mechatronic unit that is a known weak point.
Symptoms to watch for include judder when pulling away, jerky or delayed changes at low speed, a clunk into reverse, the gear display flashing, or the car dropping into a limp mode with only a few gears. Mechatronic faults on the dry gearbox are well documented and often start with the gearbox refusing to select a gear or a warning on the dash.
We always start with a proper diagnosis: reading the gearbox control unit, checking adaptation values and clutch wear figures, and looking at the fluid. Often a service and a clutch re-adaptation cures judder on a wet gearbox. If the mechatronic unit or clutch pack is at fault, we explain the repair options honestly, including repair rather than replacement where that is sound, before any work begins.

Common questions
- How often does a DSG gearbox need servicing?
- Wet-clutch DSG gearboxes generally need an oil and filter change around every 40,000 miles. The dry seven-speed gearbox has no routine oil change, but it still benefits from diagnostics if it starts to judder.
- Will a service fix my DSG judder?
- On a wet gearbox with old fluid it often does, especially with an adaptation reset. If the clutch pack is badly worn a service will not cure it, and we will tell you so.
- Do you work on Audi S tronic, SEAT and Skoda DSG gearboxes?
- Yes. They are the same gearbox families, so we service and diagnose them in exactly the same way.
