VW 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF faults
We test the EGR valve, cooler, sensors and DPF with live data, then clean what can be cleaned and replace only what has failed. Book a diagnostic appointment with us.
Why book with us
VW 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF faults with clear advice.
The 2.0 TDI is one of the most common diesel engines on UK roads, found in the Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Transporter, Audi A3, A4, A6 and Q5, and plenty of SEATs and Skodas. It is a strong engine with a long life when looked after, but its emissions equipment — the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and the diesel particulate filter (DPF) — causes most of the faults we see.
The EGR valve feeds a little exhaust gas back into the engine to lower emissions. Over time soot and oil vapour bake into a tar-like coating that stops the valve moving freely, and the EGR cooler can clog or leak coolant internally. Symptoms include flat spots, lost power, black smoke, an engine light and limp mode. A leaking EGR cooler can cause unexplained coolant loss and white smoke, which is worth catching early.
The DPF traps soot and burns it off during regular regeneration on longer runs. Drivers who mostly do short trips — a few miles across Northfield or into Bournville and back — rarely give it the chance. A stuck EGR valve adds more soot, so the two problems often go hand in hand. Keep ignoring a DPF warning and the filter can block beyond cleaning.
We read the fault codes, then look at live data for EGR position, airflow, boost and DPF pressure before deciding anything. Often a clean of the EGR valve, a sensor replacement or a forced regeneration puts things right for a fraction of the cost of new parts. Where a cooler has failed or a DPF is beyond saving, we give you a clear quote and explain why.
Live-data diagnosis
EGR, airflow, boost and DPF readings checked, not just fault codes.
Clean before replace
EGR cleaning and forced regeneration tried first where they will work.
Coolant loss traced
EGR cooler leaks pressure-tested so the fault is proven.

What our 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF check covers
Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.
- Full fault code read across engine and emissions systems.
- Live data review of EGR position, mass airflow, boost and DPF pressure.
- EGR valve inspection and cleaning or replacement as required.
- EGR cooler and coolant system pressure test where coolant loss is reported.
- DPF soot and ash assessment with forced regeneration where suitable.
- Road test and clear written findings.

Common questions
- Can an EGR valve be cleaned instead of replaced?
- Often, yes. If the valve and its motor still work and it is simply carboned up, a thorough clean restores it. If the motor or position sensor has failed, it needs replacing.
- Why does my TDI go into limp mode?
- Common causes include a sticking EGR valve, a blocked DPF, a boost leak or a faulty sensor. The fault codes and live data tell us which, so you only pay for the fix you need.
- Is this the same on Audi, SEAT and Skoda?
- Yes. The 2.0 TDI is shared across the VW Group, so the same checks and repairs apply to Audi, SEAT and Skoda models with this engine.
