Why book with us

Vauxhall 1.2 PureTech wet belt replacement with clear advice.

Since Vauxhall joined the Stellantis group, many of its petrol cars have used the 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder engine shared with Peugeot and Citroen — the Corsa F from 2019, the Mokka from 2021, the Crossland, Grandland and the latest Astra. Like the Ford EcoBoost, the PureTech's timing belt runs in engine oil, and it has a well-documented habit of breaking down early.

When the belt degrades it sheds rubbery flakes into the oil. Those flakes block the oil pump pickup, which can bring on the oil pressure light, and on these engines they can also block the strainer for the brake vacuum pump. That is why some PureTech owners first notice a hard, heavy brake pedal rather than an engine warning. Both are reasons to stop and have the car checked, not to keep driving.

Stellantis has shortened the recommended belt interval on many PureTech engines, and oil quality plays a big part in how long the belt survives. Cars that do short local runs — the school run from West Heath or a daily hop into Selly Oak — never get the oil fully hot, so fuel and moisture build up in it and the belt suffers. Higher-than-normal oil consumption on these engines is another sign worth mentioning when you book.

We start with an inspection and a measurement of the belt. If it is within limits, you drive away with a note of its condition. If it has swollen, cracked or started to shed, we replace the belt, tensioner and pickup, clean the sump and check the vacuum pump strainer so the brakes work as they should. We explain every step and price before starting.

Brakes checked too

Belt debris can block the brake vacuum pump, so we check it on every PureTech we inspect.

Common questions

Which Vauxhalls have the PureTech wet belt?
The 1.2 PureTech petrol is used in the Corsa F (2019 onwards), Mokka (2021 onwards), Crossland, Grandland and Astra L. Older Corsa, Astra and Mokka models use Vauxhall's own engines with a timing chain or dry belt instead.
Why is my brake pedal suddenly hard?
On a PureTech engine, belt debris can block the vacuum pump that assists the brakes. A hard pedal needs checking straight away — please call us rather than driving far.
Can I just change the oil more often?
Fresh oil of the correct specification helps the belt last, but it will not repair a belt that has already started to break up. An inspection tells you which situation you are in.
