Nissan Qashqai DPF problems

We find out why the filter is blocking, clear it with a regeneration or clean where possible, and fix the cause so it does not come straight back. Book a DPF check with us.

Why book with us

Nissan Qashqai DPF problems with clear advice.

The diesel Qashqai — mostly the 1.5 dCi and 1.6 dCi — is one of the most popular family cars around Northfield, Rubery and Frankley. Its diesel particulate filter (DPF) is also one of the most common reasons it comes to see us. The filter traps soot from the exhaust and is meant to burn it off during a regeneration on a steady run at speed.

The trouble is that a lot of Qashqais spend their lives on short trips: nursery runs, the supermarket, a few miles to work. The engine never gets hot enough for long enough, a regeneration keeps getting interrupted, and soot builds up. First the DPF light comes on, then the car may lose power or go into limp mode, and eventually the filter can block so badly that cleaning will not save it.

Soot is not always the whole story. A faulty differential pressure sensor can report a blockage that is not there, a sticking EGR valve or leaking injector can produce far more soot than normal, and a regeneration that keeps failing will often be down to one of those. Oil level creeping up on the dipstick is another warning: failed regenerations can dilute the oil with diesel.

We read the codes, check the pressure sensor readings and soot load, and look for the underlying cause. If the filter can be recovered, we carry out a forced regeneration or a clean. If it cannot, we quote honestly for a replacement. Either way, we give you practical advice about driving patterns that keep the filter healthy.

Cause found first

Sensors, EGR and injectors checked so the filter does not block again.

Regenerate or clean

Recovering the existing filter is always our first option.

Oil checked

We look for diesel dilution after failed regenerations and change the oil if needed.

Book a check

Book an appointment as soon as the DPF light comes on.

What our Qashqai DPF check includes

Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.

  • Fault code read and soot load reading from the engine computer.
  • Differential pressure sensor and pipe checks.
  • EGR valve and injector checks for excess soot.
  • Forced regeneration or DPF clean where the filter is recoverable.
  • Oil level and condition check for diesel dilution.
  • Road test and advice on keeping the filter clear.

Common questions

Will a motorway drive clear my Qashqai DPF light?
Sometimes. Twenty minutes or so at a steady speed can let a regeneration complete. If the light stays on or the car is in limp mode, bring it to us rather than pushing on.
Can a blocked DPF be cleaned?
Often it can, especially if it is caught early. A filter that is packed with ash after very high mileage may need replacing, and we will tell you which yours is.
Does the petrol Qashqai have a DPF?
Older petrol Qashqais do not. Some newer petrol models have a gasoline particulate filter, but the DPF problems we see are almost all on the dCi diesels.
