We check oil condition and pressure, listen for bearing noise and advise on the servicing that protects these engines. Book a check the moment you hear a knock.
Why book with us
Land Rover TDV6 crankshaft failure with clear advice.
The 2.7 TDV6 in the Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport, and the later 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6, are strong, refined engines — but they have a well-documented weakness in the bottom end. The crankshaft bearings can wear or spin in their housings, and in the worst cases the crankshaft snaps. When that happens, the engine is finished and the repair is one of the most expensive a Land Rover owner can face.
Most failures come down to oil. These are heavy vehicles, often used for towing, and the engines work hard. Long service intervals, low oil levels, the wrong grade of oil or oil diluted by diesel from repeated DPF regenerations all reduce the protection the bearings get. The engine usually gives little warning before a failure.
Signs to take seriously include a knocking or rumbling from low down in the engine, a low oil pressure warning, the oil level rising (a sign of fuel dilution) and metallic particles in the oil. If you hear a new knock, stop driving and call us — a bearing caught early is a very different job to a snapped crank.
We cannot make a TDV6 immune, but we can reduce the risk. We service these engines with the correct Land Rover-approved oil, recommend a shorter oil change interval than the long-life schedule, check for fuel dilution and look at the DPF and EGR health that feeds into it. If there is already damage, we explain the options — a rebuild or a replacement engine — with honest costs so you can decide whether the vehicle is worth it.

Common questions
- Which Land Rovers are affected?
- Mainly the Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport with the 2.7 TDV6, and to a lesser degree the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 in the same models.
- How often should I change the oil on a TDV6?
- Many owners and independent garages change it more often than the long-life schedule, especially on vehicles that tow or do short trips. We will suggest an interval based on how you use yours.
- Can a failed crankshaft be repaired?
- Sometimes the engine can be rebuilt with a new crankshaft and bearings; sometimes a replacement engine makes more sense. We look at the damage and give you both prices.
