The three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost has been fitted to the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, C-Max, EcoSport and Puma since 2012. Unlike most engines, its timing belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil — a "wet belt". Ford did this to make the engine quieter and more efficient, but it means the belt ages in hot oil rather than dry air, and it wears faster when the oil is old, the wrong grade or diluted by lots of short trips.
As the belt wears, its surface starts to break up. The tiny fragments are carried round with the oil and collect on the gauze strainer of the oil pump pickup. Once enough builds up, the pump cannot draw oil freely, oil pressure drops and the oil warning light flickers or comes on. Carry on driving and the bearings and turbocharger are starved of oil. If the belt itself fails, the valves meet the pistons and the engine is usually beyond economical repair.
The early signs are easy to miss: an oil pressure warning at idle when hot, a light rattle on start-up, or a belt that has visibly swollen or cracked when we look at it through the oil filler. We see a lot of EcoBoost Fiestas and Focuses from Northfield, Longbridge and Kings Norton, and the ones that arrive before the warning light comes on are far cheaper to put right than the ones that arrive on a recovery truck.
Our honest advice: if your car is past 60,000 miles or six years old and has no record of a belt change, have the belt inspected now rather than waiting for Ford's full interval. If it is swollen, cracking or the strainer is contaminated, we replace the belt, tensioner and oil pump pickup together and flush out the debris. If it is in good order, we tell you so and note the condition for next time.

- Often you cannot tell from the driving seat until the oil light appears. We can look at the belt through the oil filler and measure it, which gives a far better picture than mileage alone.
- Is it the same as a normal cambelt change?
- No. Because the belt sits inside the engine, the job takes longer and the oil system has to be cleaned out as well. We quote you for the full job before any work starts.
- Can the right oil make the belt last longer?
- Yes. The belt is designed around a specific Ford oil. The wrong grade, overdue oil changes and fuel diluted oil from short trips all shorten its life, which is why we always use the correct specification.
- Does this affect the 1.5 and 1.6 EcoBoost?
- The wet belt problem is mainly a 1.0 EcoBoost issue. The larger EcoBoost engines use a timing chain but have their own known coolant faults, which we can also check.
