Why book with us

Audi TFSI oil consumption with clear advice.

Audi's 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrol engines from roughly 2008 to 2012 — the EA888 second generation, found in the A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT, and in some VWs, SEATs and Skodas — are well known for burning oil. Some owners find themselves topping up a litre every 1,000 miles or less. The root cause is the design of the piston rings, which can clog with carbon and stop scraping oil from the cylinder walls.

Heavy oil use is not just an inconvenience. Run the engine low and the timing chain tensioner — another known weak point on early engines of this family — and the bearings suffer. Oil burning also fouls spark plugs, damages the catalytic converter over time and can cause misfires and emissions failures at the MOT.

Not every thirsty TFSI has worn rings. A failed crankcase breather (PCV) valve, a leaking turbo seal or simple external leaks can all look like consumption, and they are much cheaper to fix. That is why we never jump straight to an engine strip. We measure consumption over a set distance, check for leaks and test the breather first.

If the rings are the cause, the proper repair is updated pistons and rings, often with the timing chain and tensioner renewed while the engine is apart. It is a significant job, so we explain the costs against the value of the car and let you decide. For some owners, keeping the oil topped up and checking the level weekly is the sensible choice, and we will tell you that honestly.

Measured consumption

A controlled oil use test gives you facts, not guesswork.

Cheaper causes first

Breather valve, turbo seals and leaks ruled out before any strip-down.

Timing chain checked

Tensioner and chain condition assessed on early TFSI engines.

What our TFSI oil consumption check covers

Clear expectations, no surprises. If anything extra is needed, we explain it first.

  • Oil level set and sealed, then measured again after a set mileage.
  • External leak inspection and turbocharger seal check.
  • Crankcase breather (PCV) valve test.
  • Compression and leak-down testing where rings are suspected.
  • Timing chain tensioner and chain stretch assessment.
  • Written findings with repair-versus-manage advice.

Common questions

How much oil use is too much?
Any engine uses a little, but if you are regularly adding oil between services — especially a litre every couple of thousand miles or less — it is worth testing.
Which Audis are affected?
Mainly 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrol models built from about 2008 to 2012, including the A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5 and TT. Later engines had revised pistons and rings.
Is it worth fixing?
It depends on the car's value and condition. We lay out the options, including managing it with regular top-ups, so you can make an informed choice.
